MICROPHONE INPUT Professional audio quality in video recording requires a microphone situated close to the talent.  This is commonly a boom mounted overhead mic or a wired or wireless lavaliere mic.  A wired mic typically employs a ”balanced” signal connected with an XLR connector.  Most camcorders include 2 XLR mic inputs and some also include a 1/8”stereo input.  This is very versatile allowing for many audio input types. A DSLR only incorporates an 1/8” stereo input which allows for a wireless mic connection or camera mounted mics.  For the connection of balanced wired mics, an accessory audio adapter or mixer is required. Camera mounted cardioid microphones will work somewhat satisfactory at close range (maybe 6 feet max) but for quality audio recording the mic must be as close to the talent as possible.
