HEADPHONE MONITOR The audio monitor output on a camcorder is the exact audio being recorded or played back.  It is critical to listen to this signal while recording to assure quality audio.  Ask any audio professional and they will tell you that quality audio can only be achieved by listening to the signal being recorded as Murphy''s law prevails. Most DSLRs do not include an audio monitor output.  If an audio mixer front end is added to the DSLR camera, the audio can be monitored, but the audio monitor signal from the mixer is not the audio being recorded.  It is just the output of the mixer. Also one of the issues with early DSLRs is the lack of VU meters while recording. Great care must be taken to assure that the signal level input adjustment in the camera is correct in order to assure quality audio. In the future, it is likely that all HD recording DSLRs will include headphone monitor output.
